Match report - Sat 4th April 09 NEWCASTLE Ravens had their sights set on victory as they travelled north of the border in a friendly clash against the Caledonian Thebans. And in a battle with the Scots a well-deserved win was achieved at Cavalry Park, Edinburgh. Following on from previous success a noticeable step up in the tartan army's strong defence at times had fears that William Wallace's men had resurrected from the dead, if only for the first 15 minutes. But the Ravens, aided by the return of scrum-half Jules Collins - back from injury - and prop Richard Daly, certainly went full steam ahead with their stepped up training schedule. In a game of rugby-10s it was the perfect chance for some players to step out of their comfort zone and become a little more versatile in their positions. Nelly Iley made his debut as hooker in the absence of captain Frankie McElduff, passing back the ball with powerful poise. A quick first try by centre Chris Struthers was the first of his hat trick of the afternoon, matched by that of fly half Derek Wilson who also secured a conversion. Both players sprinted to the try line with a clear run and securing what was an unbeatable lead for the black, white and reds. Playing out of position, regular scrum-half Paul Staines narrowly missed out on his first ever try for the club due to a dubious decision by the ref. The game also marked the debut of winger Stephen Dixon, a new kid on the block who took the knocks and held on to the ball - not bad for someone who had never owned a pair of rugby boots a month ago. Final score 33-5 to Newcastle Ravens. With six weeks to go until the European Cup in London, the club has become an unrecognisable team from 12 months ago with added passion to keep themselves in the game. Club Chairman and second row player David Burke said “This was a fantastic success for the Ravens and a boost to team confidence just 7 weeks before the Union Cup in London. It just goes to show how much the guys have improved recently with new coach Tam Taylor joining our ranks.” Newcastle Ravens will host the Caledonian Thebans, at the Novos RFC, Benton, on Saturday, April 25 (kick-off at 2pm, spectators are welcome).
