Frequently Asked Questions

I know nothing about rugby, where do I start?!?
There are an excellent few pages on the basics of rugby on the BBC website

OK, itlooks like something that I may enjoy, but....

Who are you?
Newcastle Ravens Rugby Football Club is for people who are interested in playing for or supporting a gay rugby team in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.

What do you mean by a ‘gay team’?
We promote ourselves as a gay team because we aim to increase overall participation in the often straight-dominated sport of rugby by giving gay men the opportunity to join a team without having to worry about coming out or facing potential prejudice. However, we are not nor wish to be ‘exclusively gay’ and we welcome all men in the Newcastle area who support our aims and wish to play rugby, whether gay, bi, curious or straight. We hope the team can break down barriers, not put them up!

Can I join in if I’ve never played before / am unfit / think I’m too old?
Yes! We want as many people as possible to come along and anyone who wishes to play will be more than welcome, regardless of age, fitness level or experience, and there's no pressure to play until you feel ready to give it a try. It’s a great way to get fit, meet new people, learn a new sport / improve your skills and of course there’s also the socials….

What do I need?
Just your usual sports kit is fine, though eventually you will need to consider buying a gum shield and rugby/football boots (with metal studs).

Where can I get more info?
Browse the rest of his website (duh!) and you can also email us at info@newcastleravens.co.uk but the best way to find out is to just turn up to training or one of our socials and find out for yourself.
